The town of Mussoorie is widely believed to have gotten its name from the indigenous shrub "mansūr," which is abundant in the area. Residents of India often refer to the town as Mansuri. Mussoorie was established in 1803 after the Gorkhas, led by Umer Singh Thapa, conquered the Garhwal and the Dehra.
